Are Air Source Heat Pumps More Efficient?

“Which is more efficient? Air source heating or electric radiators?”

This is a very common question that is asked by many property owners. And with the cost of energy rising, it’s understandable why many people seek an answer to it. Air source heat pumps (ASHPs) are becoming more popular and some people view it as a better alternative to the traditional methods which include stove, gas, electric, and oil boilers. There are however some people who claim that it isn’t as effective as many people claim. To find the truth, it is important to look at the advantages and disadvantages of air source heating.

Advantages of air source heat pumps

-Lower carbon emission: According to statistics, air sources heat pumps generate lower CO2 emissions compared to other heating techniques including electric, oil, gas, and stove. This is attributed to its mode of working since it derives most of its heat from the atmosphere.

-Consumes Less Power: Both air source heating and electric radiators require electricity to run. However, air source heat pumps use lesser energy because they get the heat from the atmosphere and don’t need to produce it. Electric radiators need to first produce the heat and then redistribute it into the home or any other property.

-Easy Installation: Many electricians in Portsmouth and other places concur that installing an air source heat pumps is easier compared to other alternatives. You simply need to fit the unit in an outside space. The unit can be fitted either on a wall or placed on the ground.

-Space saving: Modern units have become much smaller but more effective. This has made it easier and simpler to fit the air source heat pumps in small spaces like an apartment, studio, or a small home. The systems generally operate like a refrigerator in reverse, and if well installed, y will deliver good service.

-Versatile: Air source heat pump units come in either Air-to-water or Air-to-Air. In the first system, the heat that is generated is passed through a wet central heating system while in the latter, the hot air is circulated using a fan system.

-Energy Efficient: Research shows that a properly installed air source pump is more energy efficient compared to the traditional electric radiator. This especially applies when it is working at lower temperatures. It also runs much cooler and this extends its lifespan and lowers the cost of ownership.

-Little Maintainance: One reason that is driving people to ASHP is its lower maintenance. This is credited to the fewer parts, simple design and operation, and improved technology. As earlier indicated the unit simply draws the heat from the atmosphere and distributes it through a central system or via a fan system.

-Potential income: The UK government through the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) compensates property owners who have installed air source heat pumps.

Disadvantages of air source heat pumps

-Need outside space: You need some external space to install the external condenser unit which is part of the air source heat pumps. This means that people in small apartments or homes may be unable to install it.

-A little noisy: The condenser unit of the ASHP can be a bit noisy. This may create some inconvenience if the unit is fitted in a small home.

-Needs Electricity: Air source heat pumps still need electricity to run. You, therefore, can’t use it off grid or when there is a power interruption.

-Needs good insulation: The air source heat pump will deliver good service if the home is well insulated. The installer needs to make certain that no heat is escaping and the property is draught-proofed.

Final Thoughts

We have briefly looked at the advantages and disadvantages of an air source heating. Its strong points include energy efficient, easy installation, runs cooler, versatile, require little maintenance and can be a source of income. The downside is that the condenser needs some external space; it is not the most silent and needs electricity to run.

Before installing a unit, it’s important to seek advice or consult a qualified, experienced, licensed and insured electrician.
